Our family has visited Great Wolf Lodge several times, but our last visit was a real treat. Instead of staying in a standard room, we upgraded to a Kid Cabin suite. It was like having a little home away from home for my son.
The Kid Cabin suite was unlike any hotel room I have ever seen. The room had the standard bed for the adults and a seating area with a sleeper sofa. But the giant log cabin is what made the room unique. The cabin had a bunk bed and a single twin bed, so up to three children could sleep in there. The walls of the cabin are themed to look like the inside of a log building and there is a small TV mounted to the wall. My son was thrilled to have his own TV and made good use of the remote while flipping through the channels from the comfort of his bed.
As a parent, I liked the Kid Cabin because it gave my son his own space within the suite while still giving me and my wife our own area. I will admit that I am spoiled at our home. If I need some quiet, I can always retreat to our living room or to my home office. Whenever my family stays in a hotel room, it always feels like we are on top of each other in the small space. Staying in the Kid Cabin was the first time that I have ever felt like there was enough room for the whole family in a hotel room.
If your child is used to sleeping with a light on, the Kid Cabin has a ceiling light that can be left on independent from the other lights in the room. The cabin also has an electrical plug if you feel like bringing your own night light. The cabin does not have a door and there are two openings for “windows” which let in a fair amount of light for children.
While the cabin is the highlight of the room, there is plenty for adults in the Kid Cabin suite. Our room had a gas fireplace, large bed, and a seating area with a sleeper sofa. If you really wanted to pack people into the room, you could sleep 7 people. The view from your room will vary, but during our stay we had a nice view of the Howlin’ Tornado water slide. It was a really nice set up.
The rooms at Great Wolf Lodge are designed with a counter and sink placed outside the bathroom. This design works well for families, because you can brush your teeth and fix your hair even if someone is using the shower or porcelain throne. I also noticed that Great Wolf Lodge upgraded the brand of shampoo and soap since our last visit.
On average, an upgrade to a Kid Cabin suite will cost an additional $90 per night compared with a standard Family Suite. Based on my experience, the cost of the upgrade is worth it because of the unique experience for your children. My son absolutely loved having his own cabin (and TV). He raved about the experience to his friends at school. My wife and I really liked having the extra space in the room and the fireplace was a nice touch.
During our past visits, I had wondered if the upgrade would be worth it. Now I wonder if we can ever visit again without upgrading. Staying in a Kid Cabin suite was a real treat and is something I recommend for anyone planning a visit to Great Wolf Lodge.
