The Toyota Camry is one of the most ubiquitous cars on the road. I counted at least fifteen of them during my drive to work the other day. The Camry has been known as a safe and reliable vehicle, but there was always room to advance the design. With the 2015 Camry, Toyota is taking a big step in the right direction, with striking hood lines and a sporty interior that make the Camry stand out from the crowd.
My favorite parts of the new design are the sport mesh front grille, LED headlights, and the 18-inch alloy wheels. My son was just happy that I had a red car to test drive, since that is his favorite color. But it is hard to deny that Toyota’s new design grabs attention. Even from behind, the car has details like the dual chrome-tipped exhaust that add to the sporty new look.
The interior of the 2015 Camry made me feel like I had slipped into the cockpit of a race car. The leather trimmed sport seats cradle you as you hug those corners. I really liked the red stitching that was used to accent the leather interior. My wife commented on it as well. The contrast of the red against the leather gives the interior a high end look that you wouldn’t expect from a vehicle known for safety and reliability.
The Camry had all of the creature comforts I could want for the daily commute. The multimedia system connected to the music on my phone and I was able to control it all using the steering wheel buttons. I liked that the display had a few options, which let me show multiple items on one screen. I could see the current weather, my song info, and the navigation altogether without having to toggle between functions.
The dual zone automatic climate control was perfect for keeping the cabin warm as we drove around on a rainy day. And as always, heated seats tend to be one of my favorite options to find in a car. My only nitpick is that there wasn’t a power outlet for the back seat. Like most children, my son likes to play games on his tablet while we’re driving and often looks for a power outlet for a recharge.
The 2015 Toyota Camry has an impressive V6 engine that made the car take off like a rocket. I was blown away by how quickly I could get up to 60 from a complete stop. It made merging onto the freeway a breeze. I didn’t use the paddle shifters, but they are available if you really want to squeeze extra power out of the engine. The V6 gets an estimated 31 highway MPG.
Even with the extra power, the Cary’s cabin was very quiet. Toyota says some of the aerodynamics help reduce noise. But whatever they did, it worked and I was able to enjoy the JBL sound system without any distractions.
There are several safety features built into the Camry that made me feel confident driving around with my family. The blind spot mirror was super helpful when changing lanes. A little light appears on your side mirror to let you know of the potential danger. The backup camera had some great sensors. We have some crazy drivers around here and several times the Camry alerted me to vehicles speeding through the parking lot before I even saw them.
Dynamic radar cruise control is one of those features that will fundamentally change how to take a road trip. I can’t imagine driving from Seattle to Portland without cruise control and now I wouldn’t want to make that drive without DRCC which automatically adjusts your vehicle speed to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. So say you have the cruise control set at 75 and someone cuts you off. The Camry will automatically slow and maintain a safe distance without requiring you to tap the brakes or having to turn off cruise control.
The 2015 Toyota Camry comes in a few flavors, starting at $22,970. The XSE model starts at $26,150.
I was impressed with the Camry’s bold new design and sporty interior. It was a comfortable and safe vehicle for my family. I appreciated the power of the V6 engine that still gave great gas mileage. The 2015 Toyota Camry makes you feel like you are driving a race car with the confidence of knowing your family will be safe and comfortable getting there.
