Do you remember the sense of adventure you felt the first time you rode in an airplane? There was that sense of wonderment as you soared above the clouds and looked down on all the small houses and cars below. I felt that same sense of childhood wonderment when I flew the Chroma 4K Camera Drone for the first time. It really was a lot of fun.
There has been a lot of talk about drones lately and I’d guess they will be a popular Christmas gift this year. Drones have come down in price and the quality has really improved. I remember looking at them a few years ago and the best ones were expensive and only had a few features. The Chroma is an example of just how far drones have come over the years.
There are a four types of Chroma Camera Drones, with the type of camera being the main difference between the models. I got to test drive the Chroma with the CGO3 4K Camera, which is essentially the complete package. Out of the box it came with everything you could possibly need: battery, charger, remote control, propeller blades (and extras), and a top of the line camera with memory card.
The great thing about the Chroma is that it is easy enough for a beginner to fly, but has advanced settings that make it ideal for anyone to use. For my first few flights, I just kept the switch in Smart Mode which made it very simple to operate.
There is a return to home switch that basically puts your drone into autopilot so it safely flies back and lands in the spot where it took off. These settings take all of the guesswork out of flying a drone and can make a beginner feel very comfortable flying for the first time.
After I finished my first flight, I was really excited to see the video footage. The remote control for the Chroma has a built in video display that gives you a live feed from the drone. This was really neat because you could clearly see what was being filmed in real time.
You can easily tilt the camera with a switch and the video footage is super smooth thanks to the three axis gimbal. You don’t get any of the jitteriness or Jello effect that you might see in footage from other drones.
After I got the hang of it, I took the Chroma out of Smart Mode and had a lot of fun just flying it around. This was my first experience with a quadcopter and I was impressed with how fast it moved and how it could just float in place. It was a lot easier to operate the Chroma than I had expected. I felt like a kid on Christmas with a big smile on my face the entire time.
The Chroma has some advanced features, like Follow Me and Tracking Mode, which puts the drone into auto pilot that will follow you around for some unique aerial shots. This is a neat feature that would allow you to get video of yourself riding a bike, in a boat, or even driving a vehicle like an ATV.
I found that people were genuinely curious about the Chroma Drone and often would come over to watch or to ask questions. It is a really neat machine and I probably convinced a dozen people to get one just by showing what it can do.
With many other drones, you have to pay extra to get things like a live video feed on your remote control or to get a gimbal for steady video footage. Chroma is the complete package and worth every penny. You can find the Chroma Camera Drone at Horizon Hobby and if you use promo code FALL15 you can save 10%. Keep an eye out for their Black Friday specials as well.
If you are looking at buying a drone for a Christmas gift, the Chroma 4K Camera Drone is a great choice because you get a quality, easy to use product with everything included in the box.
