Living in the Northwest has its perks. Every now and then, you get to see one of the Alaska Airlines Disney themed planes at the airport. And if you’re really lucky, you actually get to fly on one of the planes to the Disneyland Resort. Alaska Airlines unveiled their fifth Disney plane today, which features images of Mater, Lightning McQueen, Guido, and Luigi from the Disney-Pixar film Cars.
The colorful Boeing 737-800 is named “Adventure of Disneyland Resort” and took a 34-member crew 29 days to paint the plane. I’ve included a neat time lapse video at the end of this blog.
Four Make-A-Wish children from Washington and Alaska, ages 3 to 7, and their families, were on the inaugural flight. The families will spend the next few days at the Disneyland Resort, where they will be treated to several special activities. Alaska Airlines provides air travel for about 225 Make-A-Wish families each year. From first hand experience, I can say that the Make-A Wish trips are special moments for the families and the donations from these big companies mean a lot.
One of the interesting features of the paint job is that Mater’s rustic-looking muffler, which is located on the tail of the jet, will naturally change color over time due to the plane’s normal exhaust stains. Whomever thought of that design detail deserves a raise.
