My son continues to surprise me with his curiosity. Last week, we spent a lot of time together while my wife was out of town. We went to the aquarium. We walked through Pike Place Market. And we spent a lot of time just hanging out together. It was fun to hear, and to try and answer, his questions about the world as we wandered about. Thanks to Google I even managed to sound somewhat intelligent when answering a few of his questions.
Like many households, we have a Netflix account and we often watch movies and shows together as a family. My son loves to watch anything related to science, construction, or animals. We must have watched the Mighty Machines episode about trains at least a dozen times by now. New stuff is always being added, which is why I was thrilled to see one of my childhood favorites, Bill Nye the Science Guy, added to the Netflix streaming library.
They currently have a collection of 31 episodes available, each of which is around 22 minutes in length. I think that the show had around 100 episodes, so hopefully we will eventually see the rest of the collection added someday. What I like about Bill Nye, other than the fact that he started off his television career in Seattle, is that he touches on a variety of natural science topics.
Many of the science shows out there today just focus on one aspect, like animals. The topics of Bill Bye’s episodes were far reaching. Just withing this first collection on Netflix your child can learn about the desert, aquatic animals, lava, the atmosphere, and earthquakes just to name a few of the topics. There are even a few celebrity appearances. Drew Barrymore is in the episode about Flowers and Samuel Jackson makes an appearance in Episode 27 about Inventions.
In addition to Bill Nye, Netflix has a few other new programs available in May for children and families:
1. All Hail King Julien
2. Littlest Pet Shop: Season 3
3. Lalaloopsy: Festival of Sugary Sweets
4. Puss in Boots
5. H20 Mermaid Adventures
6. Richie Rich: Season 2
7. Mako Mermaids: Season 3
After watching the first few episodes with my son, I am pretty sure that I will have “Bill, Bill, Bill, Bill…Bill Nye the Science Guy” stuck in my head for a while. Whatever your child is interested in, there is plenty to discover on Netflix.
