What did you do with the gift cards you received as Christmas presents? I’m proud to say that I used mine to buy a helicopter and a robot. Did I mention that they both shoot missiles?
My big purchase was an Air Hogs – Battle Tracker with Yellow Disc Firing Helicopter. I bought it on a whim, with the simple goal of buying something frivolous with my gift cards. It has turned out to be a lot of fun and something that my son and I can play with together.
My son has plays with the Battle Tracker robot, which fires little foam missiles at the helicopter. You can set it to automatic so that it tracks the helicopter on its own and then fires at will. It is impressive to watch this thing as it tracks the helicopter. It also has a wired controller, which is what my son uses to manually operate the robot and fire the missiles. Dad Does has a couple videos of this thing in action.
Shooting down helicopters is fun, but we have also used stacks of cups as targets. It is a little easier for my son to shoot at the stationary cups instead of a moving helicopter. He gets a big thrill when the pyramid of cups come crashing down.
I have been the primary helicopter pilot, simply because it is tricky to fly the thing. Back in December, I found one of these helicopters in my rain gutter while I was putting up the Christmas lights. Now I can see why the helicopter flew off course. They can be challenging to steer, especially if you do it in an open area where a cross wind can interfere. For now, our helicopter remains an indoor toy.
You can win your very own Air Hogs battle tracker and helicopter and copy of The Geek Dad Book by entering the Rafflecopter sweepstakes below.

That looks really neat. I hope to win one (for my son, of course).
