Parenting is always an adventure: whether it is emptying your son’s pockets before doing the laundry, discovering old food in the couch cushions, or discovering the strange mess your child left in the bathroom. Nothing really prepares you for being a parent.
Some adventures are better than others. Family vacations, trips to grandmas house, and exploring your hometown are fun ways to bond as a family. This summer, we are spending a few days playing tourist in Seattle, followed by a little family vacation to California. It is fun to go on an adventure as a family, even when it is as simple as watching an adventurous movie at home.
My son and his friends love the How to Train Your Dragon movies and it is easy to see why. There are dragons, and sword fighting, and an epic adventure. The first movie is great because it shows a character who transforms to become courageous and beloved by his city. I especially love the latest movie because of the father/son story line. The How to train Your Dragon movies are among my son’s favorites, which is why he was excited to see the all-new Netflix original series Dragons: Race to the Edge.
Hiccup and Toothless return for a new adventure in Dragons: Race to the Edge. Soaring beyond their home on the island of Berk in search of new dragons, Dragons: Race to the Edge introduces some of the most exciting dragons yet, each with its own amazing abilities — shock waves, cannon balls and fire blasts, just to name a few.
The temperatures have been soaring in Seattle, so we decided to have a dragon adventure indoors (thank goodness for air conditioning) and watch the new Netflix series. My son dressed up in his finest viking regalia and our kind-hearted golden retriever played the role of the dragon. I am glad that we have a patient dog.
In the new series, Hiccup finds a magical Dragon Eye artifact aboard an abandoned ship, which leads him to discover that there is more outside the confines of Berk. I don’t want to spoil the epic adventure that follows, but in Hiccup’s own words, “this changes everything.”
If you would like to have your own family vacation to the Island of Berk, just fire up your tablet and launch the Netflix app. We highly recommend trying some “dragon claws” and “dragon scales” munchies to set the mood. Every day is an adventure when you are a parent. But the best adventures are when you can bond together as a family, whether you are in the family car, in an airplane, or simply watching a great show at home.
