En route to its new home at the California Science Center, the Space Shuttle Endeavour was flown over the Disneyland Resort on Friday, Sept. 21.
The shuttle, mounted atop NASA’s modified 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA), departed from Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Wednesday, Sept. 19, and flew over a number of U.S. landmarks, including the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World.
The flyover created several photo opportunities as the space shuttle crossed over Tomorrowland, Soarin’ Over California and other Disneyland landmarks.
Update: NASA has released an official photo of Space Shuttle Endeavour over Disneyland.
Inside Soarin’ Over California is a photograph of the Space Shuttle Columbia and crew, which serves as a reminder of the human sacrifice that was part of our quest to explore the heavens.
Seeing the shuttle fly over Tomorrowland was especially poignant considering how the land was essentially created to celebrate the space age. The concept of space travel fueled the imaginations of countless children over the last few decades.
You could feel some of that same old excitement return as the crowds stopped in their tracks, looked to the sky and cheered as the Endeavour flew overhead.
