All good things come to an end, which is what my son is grappling with as the start of second grade looms near. Where did the summer go?
Getting back into the routine of school takes some time. We usually start enforcing regular bedtime hours a week or two in advance so he can get back into the habit of waking up early. We also had our son take part in a reading camp so he wouldn’t fall back on his studies over the summer. Even with planning, going back to school can still be a shock to the system.
To help your child ease back into things, here are a few of the best “back to school” shows on Netflix. Sometimes just watching shows about school can help your child mentally prepare for the fun, and learning, that is ahead.
How the States Got Their Shapes is one of my favorite shows on Netflix. It is a clever documentary series that truly does make history entertaining. The show uses the geography of each state to tell the story of its history and politics. I especially liked the episode about California which answered why I always saw “State of Jefferson” signs while driving through the northern part of the state.
For younger children, Reading Rainbow, The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That, and The Magic School Bus are wonderful shows that spark their imaginations and inspire children to read more. I watched a few episodes of Reading Rainbow with my son and was surprised by how well the show holds up over the years.
A great new show is the Netflix original Dinotrux from DreamWorks which features prehistoric hybrid dinosaur-construction vehicles that team-up to to solve problems. You can’t go wrong with dinosaurs and trucks, but the show teaches a lot of good lessons about forming friendships, which makes it a perfect show for children going back to school.
For older kids, the new Project Mc² Netflix Original Series puts a fun spin on the stuff they’re dreading — math homework, spelling tests, and science reports. The show features four teen spies who show how girls can use their science smarts and math problem-solving skills to save the world.
And of course, this list wouldn’t be complete without the best school movie of all – Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Matthew Broderick teaches children important lessons like how to fake being ill, how to hack into a school’s computer system, and how to steal a car. Wait a minute. Maybe it isn’t the best advice for kids, but is is still an entertaining movie.
Children can feel some anxiety in the days leading up to a new school year. Help calm their nerves and prepare them for the classroom by watching a few of these great shows from Netflix.
