We all have a natural desire to protect our home. We build fences. We lock doors. And for many families, a security system is an essential part of keeping your home secure. When we bought our first house, I had a home security system installed so that we had peace of mind while we were away. The downside was that we had to pay a monthly fee for the monitoring service. The system itself wasn’t great, as it was just door alarms. What I really wanted was a camera system so that I could see what was going on at my home.
Over the years, home security camera systems have become much more affordable and easier to install, while the quality of the images has dramatically improved. We just installed a 4K NVR video system from Lorex and it gives us clear images of our home in both daylight and at night. The system came with two bullet cameras, two motorized dome cameras, and a network video recorder (NVR) which stores all the video footage locally at my home. The system was easy enough to install on my own using the provided cables and hardware.
Lorex Home Security Cameras
The bullet cameras are the bigger, rectangle shaped cameras that came with the system. I installed one of these cameras on the side of our house so we could monitor the side yard and backyard gate. I placed the other bullet camera on the corner of the house to give a view of the backyard and the trees behind our home. I like the LNB8973B bullet security cameras because they have a motorized zoom lens that lets you remotely adjust the viewing area and focus. I can zoom in to see the birds and squirrels in the backyard trees, or I can use the zoom lens to get a good view on anyone coming through our backyard gate.
I installed the two LNE905AB dome security cameras on the front of the house because they are smaller and easy to discretely place on the overhang of our roof. For example, I placed one camera above our front door so that I can keep an eye on package deliveries. The cameras have a built-in microphone for listen-in audio monitoring. The cameras are also motorized, which lets me move them around to get different views as someone walks up our driveway and approaches the front door. These small cameras are perfect for any home because they are discreet, and they give a wide angle 112° field of view so you don’t miss a thing.
The cameras use Power Over Ethernet (POE) which means that they don’t need a separate power plug to operate. They get power from the ethernet cables that you use to connect the cameras to the NVR. I was thrilled to see this because it meant one less wire to deal with. I also prefer a wired system because you get a better connection and you don’t have to deal with changing batteries. The cameras come with ethernet cables in the box, which made it straightforward to get it all connected.
Lorex Night Vision
Most security cameras are great in the daylight but tend to have poor nighttime video quality. The black and white footage is often grainy and seldom allows you to see any details. The Lorex cameras are different because they use a “nocturnal” system that provides color footage at night. And let’s face it, we really want cameras that can help us feel safe at night when it is harder to keep an eye on the place. I enjoyed using the Lorex app on my iPad to see clear images of the backyard, even at night. Now I just need Lorex to invent a system for scaring away the deer and rabbits when they eat our flowers.
Lorex Network Video Recorder
Some people like having a security system connected to the internet so that you can monitor your cameras from anywhere. I fall into that camp because I travel fairly often and the system gives me some reassurance that the house is still standing while I’m away. For many others, there is a preference to store the camera footage at your house and to avoid potential security risks by having a system connected to the internet. The Lorex system works for both of these needs, which is why I think it is a great choice for home security.
The Lorex system comes with an eight-channel NR900 Series Network Video Recorder (NVR). The NVR has a 2 TB hard drive to store your video footage locally. If you want to use internet services, you can do that as well to create cloud backups of the data stored on your NVR. But the Lorex system works great even if you never connect it to the internet. It is the best of both worlds. You can swap out the NVR’s hard drive it you want more storage space. You can also connect up to eight cameras to the NVR if you want to expand on the four cameras that come with the system.
