Like many children, my son enjoys listening to the same songs over and over ad nauseum. But dear old dad needed a break from the cycle, so I dug around for some new child friendly music that wasn’t from a Radio Disney playlist.
I stumbled onto the music of Tim Kubart, who has been teaching and entertaining as a children’s musician since 2005. Tim and his band Tim and the Space Cadets are known around New York because they frequently play at various children’s venues. But the band is getting broader exposure on XM Kids Radio because of their upcoming album.
I found Tim and the Space Cadets through YouTube, where their video for “Superhero” made me smile. The song is from the band’s upcoming first album, Anthems for Adventure, which will be released January 29.
The songs on the album are inspirational for children and include messages that encourage them to get outside, use their imaginations, and play.
I also liked that the band has a really nice back story. Instead of getting his start playing dive bars, Tim Kubart began his career in music while volunteering in the nursery of a homeless shelter in New York City. It was there that he started to write songs for children and realized he had a knack for writing kids music.
I was able to track down two advance copies of the band’s new album, which I’ll give away randomly to two people who leave a comment below. And if you’re in the New York area, it is worth keeping an eye out for the band’s performances. They seem to play a lot of children’s venues in the area.

These guys are great. We happened to see them perform out by our house any both my son and daughter loved them. I didn’t know they had an album coming out.

The Space Cadets have a really fun sound. This is a lot better than most of the “kids music” my daughter listens to.

Do you know if they play anywhere outside of the New York area? Would love to catch them if they are in the Seattle area.

I’m not sure. Your best source is probably their website. They have a shows tab with upcoming performance dates: http://www.timandthespacecadets.com/
