This time of year, everyone in Seattle spends a lot of time looking up at the sky. The sun, combined with the annual Blue Angels show as part of Sea Fair, puts everyone in a good mood. Everyone seems to have a great spot for watching the planes, but at 902′, it is hard to argue that any place gives you as good of a vantage point as the Sky View Observatory in the Columbia Tower.
My family was very fortunate to be invited to the Sky View Observatory as the Blue Angels held practice sessions over Lake Washington. The weather was perfect as the jets soared above the city and left white trails in their wake. From the observatory, you could really appreciate the extreme maneuvers, like when the jets would go straight up into the sky.
One of my personal highlights was seeing the jets buzz by the Columbia Tower. You were basically at eye level with the pilots when they flew by. From that vantage point, we could see the jets as they took off from Boeing Field and could track them everywhere they went throughout the performance. It was amazing how much you could see from up there.
We were also treated to food from Kaspars Catering. They had a variety of appetizers for us to try, and my son was obsessed with their desserts. I lost count of how many Blue Angel macaroons he ate.
If you are visiting Seattle or simply want a unique view on Seafair, the Sky View Observatory is a great place to see the city. You can peer down at the city’s landmarks or gaze out at the ocean. Its amazing what you can see from up there.
